The mission, concept and main aspects of PROTON were presented at a workshop on EU security projects in Brussels

On the 5th of December 2018 the PROTON project was presented at the Workshop European Projects on Societal Security and Extremism: Exchanging Ideas and Practices held at the Institute for European Studies of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Brussels, Belgium. The workshop was organised in the framework of the EU-funded SOURCE project, of which VUB is partner. The presentation was given by Giulio Mazzolo from youris.com, leader of the project’s communication and dissemination activities.

The event brought together ongoing and recently finalised European projects in the realm of societal security and extremism. The goal was to enhance dialogue and exchange among these initiatives in order prevent overlap and inefficient dissemination.

The presentation of PROTON offered an overview of the project, including its motivations, overall structure and expected outcomes. The innovative approach followed by PROTON was particularly emphasised. The approach relies on the integration of societal and computational sciences, leading to the development of the PROTON-S and PROTON Wizard software tools. The former generates Agent-Based Model simulations of the civil society, whereas the latter embeds the results of PROTON-S and makes them easily available to the user. The final goal of the two tools is to provide valuable inputs to institutions implementing policies for the prevention of recruitment in organised crime and terrorist networks.

The presentation gathered significant interest from the audience and contributed to spreading the word about PROTON and its strategy towards a safer world.
